Website revamp (again)

By K2 on March 23rd, 2017 at 12:05 am EST

It’s about that time again. The bridge plugin (WP-United) I have been using here for years to integrate WordPress and phpBB 3.0.x had been abandoned years ago. WordPress kept updating, and luckily it did not break the plugin. The messageboard however, could not be upgraded any further. And as more WordPress updates kept coming out, the more sloppy patches I’d have to cobble together to keep the site running normally. I’m tired of fixing errors only to have more crop up to take their place, and I want to bring the theme up to something that’s inline with current standards (mobile friendly being a big one).

So right now, WP-United is gone. In it’s place is BridgeDD Pro, and it’s doing its job nicely so far. Cross-posts and user integration appears to have transitions seamlessly. This post will be the first test after the fact, verifying a lot of different functionality. The debug log so far is empty, which is good… haven’t seen an empty one in years ;) The WordPress portion of the site looks fine, although the sidebar widgets could use some work. The messageboard, while functional, needs some serious attention theme-wise. And eventually I’ll upgrade it to 3.1.x some point soon.

Lots to do…

EDIT – forums look much better now. This new bridge basically disables how the forum parses its theme and template files. You’re forced to hand-jam a few files to tell it where to look. Still some work to do, but we’re in a much better place.

EDIT #2 – forum has been updated to phpBB 3.1.10, which fixed a lot of other back-end issues not outwardly visible. I’ve also identified a small issue with why replying to a comment via WP to a cross-posted post wasn’t working. I’ve been hanging on to this theme *forever* which is causing the issues, it’s time to find a modern theme and edit it the way I want it to be. Still lots to do ;)

Test post (phpBB3 3.0.6/WPU 0.8 update)

By K2 on January 17th, 2010 at 9:17 pm EST

Test post…

OK, if you’re reading this, then the major backend updates I performed were a success. There are a few bugs, such as the ‘recent forum posts’ widget on the sidebar showing every single post ever made, as well as a couple other minor bugs, but overall it’s gone smoothly. I’ve let the WPU mod author know of the issues I’ve discovered, so hopefully we’ll have some fixes soon.

I have many more updates and tweaks to do regarding 3rd party phpBB3 mods, as well as a few more look n’ feel tweaks. The worst is over and done with though ;)

EDIT – if ya guys could please, go through various functions here and on the board, use the comments function here for this news post (you’ll notice it’s now fully integrated between WP and phpBB3) and so on. Some bugs the WPU author has already fixed and I’ve implemented, but if you find any other bugs or notice any weird behavior, lemme know. Thanks.

Another site change…

By K2 on June 22nd, 2009 at 3:16 pm EST

Yeah. Right now the site looks like ASS. When I did the Hardfought site overhaul, I used a portal script called OnePress to merge WordPress and the phpBB3 forums together. Worked pretty well, but just recently OnePress announced that they are seriously considering dropping support for phpBB3 – their latest update does not include support for the latest update to phpBB3 with the latest update to WordPress, both of which have important security and function upgrades. Luckily, another WP/phpBB3 portal called¬†WP-United (which is what I use with mine and my wife’s personal website) has been revitalized and is alive and kicking with full support of both of the latest updates to WordPress and phpBB3. I just finished removing the OnePress content, updated phpBB3 and WordPress (as well as the photo gallery for the msgboard) and have just finished installing WP-United. It works, but as you can see there’s a shit ton of work to do… again.

The forums and everything associated with it still function fine, just please bear with the look n’ feel until I can make the necessary updates. Enjoy.

Hardfought 2.0

By K2 on March 18th, 2009 at 4:11 am EST

On more than one occasion in the past I’ve said I was going to do an overhaul to the website. Those overhauls either never happened, or it turned into something more like a slight modification. Some were more significant than others, but overall the site has looked the same since day one.

It’s finally time to bring Hardfought into the 21st century :-P

I started work on a new look and feel earlier today. I’m using a portal script called OnePress that integrates WordPress and phpBB3. The benefits are a seamless transition between the two, integrated functionality (example: recent posts from phpBB into a wordpress front page widget), and an excuse for me to upgrade the msgboard to phpBB3. Luckily for us, the conversion from phpBB2 to 3 is very easy and virtually painless. All forums, posts, users, groups, permissions, avatars, attachments, etc carry over.

Wanna see what’s in place so far? Go to http://test.hardfought.org – right now its just proof of concept and testing out functionality. All news posts minus this one and the one before it are present, and all forum posts from around noon my time today and before are present. You should be able to login and browse around, but for right now posting ability is disabled. If for some reason you CAN post, please lemme know, cuz ya shouldn’t ;-)

I have a lot of work to do still. If you have any suggestions, I am open to any that ya may have. I do want to preserve some of the look n’ feel, but certainly not all of it, or even most of it. And this move also puts the website into Web 2.0 territory. My goal is to be able to pass the W3C Markup Validation Service to as close to 100% as possible. Anyways… I just started my 30 day block leave, so I have all sorts of time to hash it out.

Lemme know whatcha think ;-)
