Network Monitor in place

By K2 on October 24th, 2000 at 10:59 pm EST

Well tonight I finally got MRTG configured the way I want output-wise for network traffic monitoring on the game server… yay! :-) I’m not a coder by any means, so I’m having to teach myself Perl as well as the script language that MRTG uses. Fun. Anyways, you can view the network graphs displayed in real-time (updated every 5 minutes) by clicking on the new ‘Network Traffic’ link to the left. As soon as I figure out how to get MRTG to do it, I’ll have real-time CPU load monitoring available as well.

Earlier this evening I spoke with some of the people in clan Md… seems they are having some trouble with pings to the game box :-/ We ran a few traceroutes and determined that the issue most likely lies with a couple different routers on the Digex network… bleh. I think what I’m going to add to my list of ‘to do’s’ here is a guide to running traceroutes and how to interpret the information gathered, as well as recommended programs to use to run a trace if DOS just ain’t your thing. From what I’ve seen so far is that there are players that will ping great to the server (sub 100ms ping) even from as far as eastern Canada, and then others that will ping horribly (300ms +) but are just a couple hours drive away. It’s all in how your data packets are routed. Gonna see what I can do about that offending Digex router… no promises, but I’ll give it a go.
